Need For Speed

Road bikes are about delivering the confidence to redefine your limits. Go ahead, redline up the local KOM, take a flyer with 10k to go, carve a descent at the limits of traction, take on that epic loop you’ve been dreaming aboutβ€”you’ll go farther and faster than you thought possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Endurance road bikes allow you to sit more upright, ensuring all-day comfort. They can fit wider tires and usually come with disc brakes, making them versatile for riding on rougher paved roads and light gravel roads. Some come with extra compliance built into the frame to help absorb the bumps for improved comfort.

Performance road bikes are traditionally intended for racing. They are stiffer than endurance bikes, often aerodynamic, and are designed for maximum speed on the road.

Carbon frames are lighter, but more expensive, while aluminium ones are heavier, but cheaper. Carbon frames tend to help dampen vibrations particularly well, making for a smooth ride.

Rim brakes are the most common on bikes, and squeeze the outside of the rim to slow down.

Disc brakes are becoming increasingly common. They make stopping easier in wet and muddy conditions, and allow you to run wider tires for more versatility on a wide variety of terrains

Modern road bike shifting is very reliable. Even less expensive mechanical components will work in all conditions with little maintenance. Some bikes come with electronic shifting in the form of Shimano Di2 (wired) or SRAM AXS (wireless). These bikes cost more, but allow for silent, smooth, reliable shifting in any conditions.

Aluminum wheels are the most common, and less expensive. They are durable, and modern aluminum wheels are lightweight. Carbon wheels are more expensive, but are stiffer and often more aerodynamic, allowing for faster, more efficient riding on the road.
